Information for Caregivers

Getting the right information as a caregiver in order to keep yourself safe and those you care for is essential.

As the UK is dealing with the global COVID-19 (coronavirus) disease outbreak, we have mentioned some of the different precautions healthcare and home care workers should take in their everyday life to reduce the spread of this highly infectious virus.

Here are steps you can take to help prevent illness.

  • Every day and before each shift, monitor your health for symptoms of coronavirus (new onset of fever, cough , sore throat and/or shortness of breath).

  • Practice universal precautions faithfully.

  • Get to know COVID-19 and stay updated about the virus via your local health department.

  • With tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC), wear personal protective equipment and learn how to optimize its efficiency.

  • Remove work clothing immediately after each shift, and wash thoroughly.

Caring for someone who is ill

  • Follow guidance from the healthcare provider.

They may include guidelines for medication, nutrition, rest and when to seek additional medical assistance.

  • Wear disposable face masks and gloves.

The gloves should be discarded and disposed of after removing personal protective equipment.

Clean your hands with soap and water, or alcohol-based hand sanitizer immediately.

Then remove and dispose of the face mask, and with soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizer quickly clean

        your hands again.
Do not reuse gloves and face masks.

  • Carefully monitor symptoms.

Contact the healthcare provider, and report any symptoms that worsen. When there is a medical emergency, call 911            to inform them that the patient has COVID-19, or is being treated for it.

  • Assist with basic needs.

You may need to help in getting groceries, picking up medications and other personal needs.

  • Do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth.

  • Properly dispose of personal protective equipment.

Before disposing with other household waste, place contaminated gloves, face masks and other items in a

       sealed container.

After handling, clean your hands immediately.
